Police officers exist to serve and protect the people, but not raccoons. In an unforgivably heinous act of animal cruelty, police officers in New York state took turns running over a raccoon with multiple squad cars as the animal slowly died from its injuries. Now, this inarguably sadistic act has been viewed by massive amounts of people all over the world, as the entire scene was captured on video and later posted on social media sites. The police officers responsible for this disturbing act are members of Coeymans Police Department, and not only were they captured on video torturing a helpless animal, but several residents even witnessed the scene on location. In an effort to mitigate their actions, the police department posted a message on Facebook claiming that the raccoon victim was rabid, and therefore, the officers who took turns running over the critter with their cruisers were simply trying to protect members of the community from being attacked by a rabid animal. Not surprisingly, this explanation didn’t have the desired effect; instead, the sorry excuse only seemed to intensify the public backlash.
According to the excuse posted on Facebook, the police department had received multiple calls about a rabid raccoon near a shopping center. Upon spotting the raccoon at the shopping center, the officers decided that dispatching the raccoon with a handgun would put nearby residents in danger, so they figured that running the animal over with their cruisers until it died was the next most humane method of execution in this case. Of course, the police had a difficult time coming up with an excuse for why the officers took turns running over the raccoon with multiple cruisers. After more than 1,000 people, mostly the town’s residents, responded to the post with stern criticisms, skepticism and pure outrage over the purported reasoning for the animal torture, the police department removed the post. It is not yet known if the officers that took part in the animal torture will be disciplined for their actions.
Do you believe that the police in this case were being honest about their reasons for killing the raccoon the way they did?
