Fire Ants Build Their Own Boat | Texas Ant Control
Nobody likes ants, and fire ants in particular have earned the scorn of those who have been unlucky enough to have sustained their painful bites. But as annoying as these summer time party poopers have proven to be, maybe we are not giving the little bastards proper due.
In an amazing feet, fire ants have been shown to build their own rafts in order to travel across lengthy stretches of water. No they are not going on a well deserved cruise, rather they do this to escape dry land being engulfed by water, and they will float until they find more dry land.
So how do ants build their own raft? Well they do not make them out of nearby materials, instead the worker ants will use their own bodies to latch onto one another. Once these ants have formed a thick enough floor out of their own bodies the queen ant will be hoisted up to the driest region of the ant-raft to avoid exposure to water. The ant larvae will also be moved to dry regions of the temporary raft in order to ensure another generation will survive if they succeed in finding dry land despite attacks by fish. Who knew ants could be so resourceful?
Have you ever seen floating ants? How do you think they figured out how to do this?
