Pink Floyd Insect Makes List of Top Ten New Species
This is for all you Pink Floyd fans out there! Let’s be honest. Pink Floyd rocks! So, it makes sense then that an insect named after them would also rock. A damselfly was discovered last year and named after Pink Floyd’s 1969 double-LP Ummagumma. The insect was named after the band’s album because of a promise made to the author’s travel companion. The promise the man agreed to went as such, “If you ever discover a new species of the genus Umma, call it Ummagumma like the Pink Floyd album!”
The Ummagumma is no furry animal, however, and scientists are unsure whether it has grooved with a pict in a cave with a gathering of other species, and it has yet to be spotted at the garden party of a Grand Vizier.
In case you are not a Pink Floyd fanatic, here’s a little backstage info you might find interesting. The name of the album, Ummagumma, is believed to be Cambridge slang for lovemaking. The album reached a respectable No. 74 on the U.S. charts, but peaked at an incredible No. 5 in the U.K.
