The Latest News On Zika’s Potential To Spread Is Grim
We have all known for a while now that the Zika virus is particularly problematic for pregnant mothers and fatal to their unborn infants. However, it turns out that unborn infants are not the only victims of neurological damage, as Guillain-Barré syndrome has been linked to adult Zika infections.
The few cases of GBS that have been diagnosed in adults as a result of Zika have not resulted in any sort of long term or life threatening brain damage. If an adult man or woman develops the neurological disorder, his symptoms would not be any more serious than a fever, headache and/or rash. If a pregnant woman is carrying an unborn child then the virus could find its way into the infant’s brain, which would result in massive cell death and eventual death. A recent study involving mice has shown that contracting GBS while also being immunocompromised could quite possibly lead to death.
