Well Known Invasive Flatworm Found In The USA For First Time
The New Guinea flatworm has been found for the first time in the United States as well as many other countries where the flatworm in not a native species. These countries include France and Singapore, as well as many others. The flatworm is one of the most destructive invasive creatures known to man.
The International Union for the Conservation of Nature has compiled a top one hundred list showcasing the world’s worst invasive species. Of course the dreaded flatworm makes that list with no problem. Officials working for the union believe that the flatworm finds its way into regions of the world where it is non-native because people import the flatworm in a “misguided” effort to control the insect-pest population.
The flatworm is, indeed, very good at killing off plant eating insects, but it is a little too good. The flatworm kills off too many insects that are beneficial to the health of the ecosystem. For example, the flatworm especially enjoys feasting on earthworms and snails, which are two creatures that are considered essential to maintaining healthy soil and plant life. Also, the flatworm does not have to worry about natural predators on foreign soil, and birds hate the taste of these slimy creatures. These conditions allow for the unchecked proliferation of the flatworm in non-native regions. Currently the United States government is considering possible solutions to the potential flatworm problem.
What party do you think is responsible for importing the flatworm to non-native regions of the world?
