One Man’s Quest To Save A Group Of Baby Opossums
Animals are hard to dislike. There are animal lovers everywhere. If you are not an animal lover, then you certainly know somebody who is an animal lover. These types of people will go to extremes to protect animals, and being a cute-looking animal probably helps. One man recently drove across the state of Texas in order to make sure that two abandoned baby opossums received the care that they needed.
Officer Dean of the Memphis Animal Control Service in Texas was driving around one day when he spotted what looked like two baby opossums. Upon approaching the two baby opossums he realized that they had been abandoned, as they were clearly helpless and frightened. Without the proper care, these two malnourished baby opossums would not have lived for much longer. The only problem was that there was no animal hospital in the small town of Memphis, Texas. So officer Dean decided to drive two and a half hours out of the way to Amarillo, Texas in order to get the opossums to a professional veterinarian.
Despite being an animal control officer, officer Dean was not required by law to drive the opossums to the far-away hospital, but he could not have lived with himself if he had let the opossums die alone. Luckily, as a result of Officer Dean’s efforts, the two baby opossums are receiving medical care, and they are in good health.
Sadly, opossums have a bad reputation. They are often thought of as ugly, but they are actually pretty cute little critters, especially when they are babies. Many people also think that opossums are rodents, but they are actually marsupials. So they are not as closely related to the rat as you may have thought. Despite the urge to save baby animals in the wild, it is strongly recommended that people leave baby animals to themselves. If you are concerned about baby animals that you found in the wild, then call your nearest animal control organization.
Have you ever helped any type of wild animal that looked to be in need?
