People Complain Of A Bedbug Infestation At An International Airport

These days bedbugs are all over the news, and now that people are traveling more for the holidays you can expect to be hearing more about them. It is not so uncommon to find bedbugs at airports, or even on airplanes. As you can understand, airports are one of the most likely places to find bedbugs. These critters have literally traveled the world during the past few decades, and their population numbers are increasing everywhere as a result. Not long ago bedbugs were discovered inhabiting a bench at one of the busiest terminals at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, and travelers were not happy.

The Phoenix airport promptly had the benches removed in order to prevent further infestations. According to officials representing the airport, the bedbugs were contained to one single terminal, but how can they be so sure? Pest control professionals were also called in so that more areas of the airport could be inspected for infestations. However, these professionals were only notified a couple of weeks after the first bedbug sighting was reported by airport employees. Initially, the airport’s management assumed that the bedbugs did not spread after a few were found on a bench. Unfortunately they were wrong, as airport employees still complained about a bedbug presence. In response to these complaints the seats were covered and the area containing the small infestation was blocked off by security. Eventually, the seats were removed and the entire area was thoroughly inspected by pest control professionals, and further inspections will be carried out in the following months.

This is not the first time that bedbugs have been found at this particular airport. Several years ago bedbugs were discovered inhabiting another bench located in a different area of the airport. However, officials had the benches removed immediately upon discovering the first infestation. As it turned out, removing the benches worked to rid the airport of the bedbugs the first time, so who knows why airport officials did not simply do this the second time bedbugs were found?
