A Frustrated Woman Brought A Bag Full Of Dead Cockroaches To A City Council Meeting
Citizens of the United States have always been encouraged to exercise their political freedoms. Of course, the decisions that our political leaders make are not always in accordance with the wishes of the American citizenry. In these cases, it becomes a private citizen’s duty to make his or her protests heard by our political representatives. Some people may attempt to exercise their democratic freedoms by explaining their position at city council meetings. Other people may write to their congressmen. The more radical types may take to the streets in order to protest certain government actions. All of these methods are commonly used by American citizens, but one particular woman chose to protest her local government by presenting a bag full of cockroaches to councilmen during a city council meeting.
Patricia Polastri is a resident of Corpus Christi, Texas. Recently, the local government in Corpus Christi had several palm trees transplanted into a residential neighborhood. The palm trees were all planted in one particular area along Ocean Drive. Polastri lives on Ocean drive, which means that she has first hand experience with the many cockroaches that the palm trees have been attracting to her neighborhood. Polastri, and her numerous neighbors on Ocean drive, are both disgusted and frightened by the cockroach hoards that the palm trees have been attracting to her neighborhood. Due to the overabundance of cockroaches in her neighborhood, Polastri spent several months attempting to convince city council members to spread the trees out over a larger area in the city. Polastri attempted to make her point with presentations and she had brought the issue up at every city council meeting for the past several months. Finally, Polastri became fed up with her protests falling on deaf ears, so she decided to make her point by setting a bag of roaches on the councilman’s table. In response to this action, city council members are now considering doing away with the public comments segment of city council meetings. The one hundred and fifty six palm trees remain on Ocean drive, along with the cockroaches.
Do you think that the council members should have acquiesced to Polastri’s demands given that roaches were involved?
